The Jordans

Twilight

The city lights are under water here tonight
Can't imagine where you'd be
The darkness fell although the phosphorus shone white
Upon the rushing of the sea

Send someone to tell me you're fine
Being all that you can be
I thought I was the anchor on the line
But now I know the one who's cut adrift is me

Long before the waves came rushing over everything
I fell in love with you and all the books you read before the fires came
Now my heart is melting, hissing wax into the salty water
and my flame is growing dim

Across the bay there comes the chiming of a bell
Where torchlight flared some hours past
Am I imagining the censer's smoky smell
as by the cross they pray their last?

Send someone to tell me you're still mine
These final hours are rushing by
I'd give the little I have, I'd have my eyes burned blind
To hear the sound of that small lie

The city lights are under water and I'll soon be going on
The waves crash down from a great height
I'm lifted upwards to the heavens in my mind
I see the stars shine down through twilight
